DEIXIS OF ISHIGURO’S NOVEL OF THE REMAINS OF DAY ON TEACHING COHERENCE

Abstract

This research is purposed to find the types of deixis (person deixis, place deixis, and time deixis) and describe the use of deixis in the utterances used in the novel “The Remains of the Day” by Kazuo Ishiguro. This research used descriptive qualitative research. The data of the research in the form of words, sentences, phrases of deixis found in The Remains of the Day novel. The technique of data collection used documentation technique. The technique of analysis the data, there were data reduction, data display, and verification. Credibility was enhanced by the data sources was compared through triangulation technique and data discuss with the advisor. The results of this research showed that the most dominant deixis which is found in The remains of the Day Novel is person deixis which were 6.917 times. Meanwhile, the writer of the novel use person deixis on the addressing someone who include in the novel, someone who do not include in the novel and also to referring something. While, the time deixis referring the specific time. Then, place deixis referring to the location near or away.
