Abstract

This research discussed analysis on students’ grammatical errors, especially in adjective degrees of comparison. The aim of this research was to find out the common error done by students in writing adjective degree of comparison sentences. The focus discussion of this research was in the adjective test in comparison degree. The researcher follows the research steps outlined by Lexy J. Moleong to conduct the research. Researchers as the main research tool need assistance in the form of observations, tests, and documentation which are used as tools in this study to assess grammatical errors in student tests. This research referred to Dulay's theory in analyzing errors. There are four error criteria made by respondents: omission error, addition error, misordering error, and misformation error. The population of this research was in Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri 1 Probolinggo and the sample was 9th grade students of MTs Negeri 1 Probolinggo. There were 13 students as the respondents. The result of this research is it was found that the highest students’ error is omission with the total 351 errors. The second is misordering error with score 350. The third is addition with the score 267, and the last is misformation with the total of error 232. The most common type of error found from the test results is the omission error. In answering the test in the fill in the blank questions given by the researcher, the most error found is error of omitting prepositions. It was probably caused by misunderstanding of English grammar.
